A Christmas party doesn't have to just about eating, drinking and pulling crackers. Although there is nothing wrong with tradition (especially at Christmas), there are also lots of other things you can do to make your party go with a bang. Here are some ideas:
Christmas party venues
To a great extent, the location sets the tone for your party. It's important to choose a venue that will provide the right setting for the kind of event you have in mind.
A good hotel is usually a pretty safe bet for a Christmas party - and it's wonderfully convenient after an evening event to be staying upstairs and able just to flop into bed, without having to worry about transport or going out in the cold. But there are all sorts of different hotels. Do you want an old, established one with a traditional feel to it? Oak panels, low ceilings and open fires can be just the thing for a Christmassy atmosphere. Or would you prefer something modern? It can make a welcome change, during the festive season, to go somewhere with neon lights, glass, under-floor heating and not a bauble in sight. (Bah, humbug!)
Restaurants, bars and cafés, too, are very accommodating at Christmas. If you're hiring exclusive use of all or part of the venue, you can ask the staff to decorate your space in the way you want it - to match your theme, if you're having one, or in your corporate colours.
If you're looking for a more unconventional location, many interesting places have rooms available for private hire. You could, for instance, have a party at your local football stadium, cricket ground, museum, theatre, zoo, aquarium or leisure centre. If you live near some water, a cruise boat is a lovely venue for a Christmas party.
Christmas party themes
To add an extra dimension, you could give your Christmas party a theme. This can be reflected in the choice of venue, décor, entertainment and, perhaps, the dress code.
These days, Christmas is almost a theme in itself and most venues will be decorated in at least a semi-traditional manner. You can build on this and ask your guests to come in Christmas-related costumes. The obvious ones are Santa Claus, elves, reindeer and so on but you could also go more along Dickensian lines (for example, Scrooge or Victorian Christmas) or something more biblical.
For themes completely unconnected with Christmas, here are a few ideas:
- James Bond
- Casino
- Rock 'n' Roll
- Wild West
- Medieval
- Detectives
- America, Japan, Russia, Italy, Morocco or some other country that interests you
Christmas party entertainment
Depending on the style of your party, you will almost certainly want some music and probably some space for dancing. Beyond that, you may also wish to engage a specialist entertainer or two.

Other considerations when planning a Christmas party
When is the best time to hold this party?
From about the second week in December, people's diaries tend to start filling up with social engagements. Although it can be great fun to have a wild fortnight or so over Christmas and New Year, it can be quite hard for those trying to work as well as partying all night. If you're planning a corporate Christmas party, might everyone get more enjoyment out of an event held, for example, at the end of January?
How well do the guests know each other?
The less easily you feel conversation may flow, at least in the early stages of your party, the more important it is to have things for your guests to focus on. A strolling magician, bringing close-up magic to a few people at a time, can be an enormous help in breaking the ice.
